Movement and Anti-Oppression

I facilitate sessions that marry the elements of an interactive workshop with somatics-informed movement and yoga practice to support folks in finding their own sources of empowerment, voice and embodied pathways to respond to racism and internalised oppression.

Inviting gentle mindful movement practise to an anti-oppression workshop or 1-1 session could be beneficial for every body. For those who hold structural advantages such as white privilege, these spaces can help to unpick the layers of influence that white supremacy, ableism, heteronormativity and other systems of oppression have on the ways we show up in the world.

Noticing our experience when we move our bodies can bring insights about our habitual movement and thinking patterns. This in turn can make space for more conscious and intentional choice in how we think, move, respond and show up beyond the session. Growing mindful attention to the experience of movement can nurture a transformative, nuanced understanding of our past and present in the context of race, helping us to show up with integrity and courage, and to make space for curiosity, care, and collaborative interconnection.

Spaces where work on race and oppression, movement and embodiment meet are rich and fertile - there is so much to uncover and unpick. Please don’t hesitate to start a conversation and book a free 30min call.

By bringing gentle attention, compassion, empathy, expertise, and an ability to hold spaces for deepening the mind-body connection which are both supportive and challenging, I help clients to remind themselves of their own authentic pathways to embodying social change.

Let’s work together

Examples of group or 1-1 sessions include:

  • Embodied Narratives: A Somatic Approach to Unpacking Privilege and Oppression
This space integrates conversation with movement practices to help participants notice, explore and unpack their positionality in terms of privilege and oppression in a supportive environment.

  • Bodies Telling Stories: A Workshop on Race and Embodiment
An introspective and interactive workshop where participants are invited to tune into their movement and sensations in the body to explore their own identities, particularly in the context of race, ethnicity, cultural heritage and religion.

  • The Power of Spaces In-Between: Body-based Approach to Mindful Choices
A workshop inviting participants to notice and nurture small pauses in how we move, breathe, talk and respond to external situations, building internal space for intentional and courageous choices in charged contexts.

These embodied mindful and gentle movement practices incorporate intellectual exploration. They carry the potential to bring the joy of connection, curiosity, and integrity which come from the growing alignment of what we believe in and what we do.
